If you are an international student, your spouse and children under the age of 21 may accompany you to the United States on an F-2 dependent visa while you pursue your studies.

You may request to add dependents when applying for your initial Form I-20 or at a later time. To do so, you must provide financial documentation demonstrating your ability to support each dependent.

F-2 Dependent Visa Guidelines

  • Employment Restrictions
F-2 dependents are not permitted to work in the U.S. However, they may engage in volunteer activities if the position is unpaid, does not replace a paid role, and complies with U.S. labor laws.

  • Study Opportunities
    • Spouse: May enroll in part-time study or in recreational/avocational programs. To pursue full-time study, the spouse must apply for a change of visa status before enrolling.
    • Children: Must comply with local education requirements, typically attending school from kindergarten through 12th grade. Children under 21 may also pursue higher education either part-time or full-time. Once a child turns 21, they are no longer eligible for F-2 status and must apply for a different visa to remain in the U.S.

  • Health Insurance for Dependents
    • The U.S. does not have a universal healthcare system. It is strongly recommended that you purchase health insurance for all dependents. Insurance costs vary depending on the coverage selected. For more information, please contact: insuranceoffice@pacific.edu

  • International Travel
    • F-2 dependents may travel internationally as long as the F-1 visa holder maintains lawful status. When traveling, each dependent should carry:
    • Their own valid Form I-20 signed for travel
    • Relevant immigration documents
    • A copy of the F-1 visa holder鈥檚 immigration documents
