Join us for a dynamic week of discovery at the Summer Academy of Lifelong Learning, hosted at the 色虎视频 in Stockton, CA. This year鈥檚 theme, Explorations in San Joaquin County, invites adults learners of all backgrounds to dive deep into the regions鈥 rich history, vibrant ecosystems, cultural landmarks, and engaging with local artisans-guided by passionate experts in their fields.  

Over five immersive days, participants will engage in two interactive sessions daily, blending classroom context with hands-on experiences throughout the county. This academy is ideal for lifelong learners seeking intellectual engagement, local adventure, and a deeper appreciation of the diverse stories and landscapes that shape San Joaquin County.

Bird Safari at Pacific

Location: Benerd College 

Instructor: David Yee, Avian Expert & Author 

Join San Joaquin County鈥檚 Avian Expert on a guided tour of resident birds including sparrows, kinglets, thrushes and warblers on one of the country鈥檚 most beautiful campuses. Wear your walking shoes, hat and bring your binoculars (not required) and water too. 

 

Sikh Temple Tour

This Lodi temple has been serving the Lodi and Stockton region for years. It is one of the most beautiful temples in Northern California. This stunning venue is a community center with a 14,000 square foot temple with two 7,000-pound golden domes that measure 20 feet in diameter and 20 feet high. Sikhism has a significant following with 25-30 million adherents globally.

Filipino-American Martial Arts in Stockton presentation at Pacific

Date:  Tuesday, July 8

Instructor: Leo Juanitas, Bahala Na Martial Arts Association Guro  

In this session, you will learn why Filipino-American martial arts, particularly Escrima, also known as Arnis or Kali, hold a significant place in Stockton鈥檚 history. Learn the connection of Escrima to World War II and Hollywood. Guro Leo will also show you some basic self-defense techniques to help you stay safe.

Hollywood at 色虎视频

Instructor: Mike Wurtz, Head of Pacific鈥檚 Special Collections and Archives

Over a dozen films and television shows were made on the University of Pacific Stockton campus between the 1940s and the 1990s. Join Mike Wurtz, head of Pacific鈥檚 Special Collections and Archives, to follow the fictional history of campus and go behind the scenes and explore the where and why this part of Stockton was an ideal filmmaking location in the late 20th Century. Presentation, activity, and walking tour.  

Bob Hope/Fox Theatre tour

Date:  Wednesday, July 9

Time: 1:30 鈥 3:30 p.m.

Location: 242 E. Main St., Stockton 

Instructor: Kelly Howard, Tour Guide 

The Fox California Theatre was built in 1930, underwent a significant renovation in 2004 and was renamed the Bob Hope Theatre. It is a popular Stockton landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to host classical movies as well as live entertainment. Get a behind the scenes tour including a special performance on the restored 1928 Robert Morton theatre organ.

Adventures in watercolor: Reynolds Gallery talk and art activity at Pacific

Date:  Thursday, July 10

Participants will enjoy a conversational tour of a special exhibition at the Reynolds Gallery 鈥 Tony Foster: Watercolor Diaries from the Green River. We will craft a small travel journal and experiment with watercolor paint. LIMIT 12 MAX 

A Native Plant Garden Tour & Journaling Experience

As you explore the seasonal and resilient landscapes of local native plants, you鈥檒l learn about their ecological roles and unique adaptations. Included in the tour will be a journaling session design to deepen your connection with the natural world, spark creativity ,and inspire mindfulness. A journal and pencil will be included. Feel free to bring you own as well.
