OKU-Sutro Excellence Day spotlights outstanding clinical care, research and service

At Excellence Day

Examples of outstanding work across clinical care, research and community service were on prominent display during the OKU-Sutro Excellence Day celebration held May 7, 2025 at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

This longstanding tradition offers the school community the opportunity to publicly share their projects with colleagues, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests.

Dr. Didem Ozdemir Ozenen, Dr. Sinky Zheng and Joanna Faltys served as co-chairs of the OKU-Sutro Excellence Day Committee. Dr. Ozdemir Ozenen opened the event with a greeting to attendees, followed by welcome remarks from Dean Nader Nadershahi.

Keynote guest speaker Dr. Armand Bedrossian 鈥15 presented 鈥淒igital Dreams鈥 Analog Realities: What Have We Learned with the Digital Evolution?鈥 A board-certified prosthodontist, Dr. Bedrossian practices in San Francisco and is currently an affiliate assistant professor at University of Washington from which he earned his master鈥檚 degree from the advanced prosthodontics residency program. Dr. Bedrossian regularly speaks and publishes on restorative implant dentistry, primarily focusing on a complete digital workflow for implant treatment.

The event then moved to the second floor, where students and residents had arranged exhibitions and posters. Faculty judges evaluated 95 projects and engaged in discussions with the presenting students and residents. Clinical cases included implant dentistry, removable prosthodontics, restoration, endodontics, orthodontics and dental hygiene. Posters featured research, community health service and leadership and literature review, as well as projects from the school鈥檚 Personalized Instructional Program (PIP). The event also included presentations from students in the audiology program in Pacific鈥檚 School of Health Sciences.

Twenty first-year students in the International Dental Studies program competed in the IDS First Year Literature Review category.

Travin Lomeli DDS 2027 remarked, 鈥淭his being my first [project], it's a great introduction into the world of doing research and presenting. It is kind of what I want to do and it鈥檚 what I need to do鈥攚here I need to get to professionally.鈥 Lomeli added that presenting on familiar grounds at the Dugoni School and to his peers boosted his confidence. 鈥淚 feel like I can go out to ADEA and ASDA, and do the same thing.鈥

In Simlab on Excellence Day

The Dugoni School prides itself on community outreach, not just locally, but across the world. One of the Excellence Day projects presented was 鈥淥ne Love, 1000 Smiles: A Global Outreach Initiative to Jamaica鈥 in the Community Health Services and Leadership category. Preparation behind the scenes for such outreach trips begins several months in advance by recruiting and coordinating participants and gathering an extensive list of supplies. When asked how it feels, after two consecutive outreach trips to Jamaica, to be presenting on them, Peto Choti DDS 2025, one of four co-presenters on the project, commented, 鈥淚t feels good, it feels pretty rewarding to show all of the hard work that we put into the project.鈥

Added co-presenter Josh Mason DDS 2025, 鈥淩egardless of us competing with anybody else here, it kind of feels like that takes second place because we were actually able to make such a big impact in people鈥檚 lives. We鈥檙e just really happy to be here.鈥

Awards will be presented to students during an upcoming Brown Bag meeting with Dean Nadershahi and at the Alumni/Graduate Banquet during Commencement Weekend.
