Sports medicine trailblazer inducted into California Pharmacy Hall of Fame
When a professional athlete needs the expertise of a pharmacist, one name rises to the top, Michael Pavlovich ’89, PharmD, FAPhA. His unwavering campaign to bridge pharmacy and sports medicine, coupled with a distinguished career of innovation and leadership, earned him induction into the California Pharmacy Hall of Fame this year.
“It is very humbling, especially when I look at those that went ahead of me—many of whom are also Pacific alumni,” said Dr. Pavlovich.

In addition to working with collegiate athletes, he has advised clients from the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL. He and fellow alumnus Robert P. Nickell ’81, BS Pharm are the only pharmacists to have served in the role of team pharmacist for the U.S. Olympic Team. Dr. Pavlovich supported Team USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and contributed to its success in every Olympiad from 2002 to 2014. In addition, he supported athletes at numerous international competitions over the course of two decades.
Dr. Pavlovich also represented the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) on a joint task force with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association charged with medication management guidelines for athletic facilities and co-authored “Clinical Pharmacology in Athletic Training.”
Even as a student at Pacific, the spark of leadership burned brightly—he was named Student of the Year by the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) in 1989. His connection to professional organizations has been a constant through his career. He served as president of CPhA in 2000 and as trustee of APhA from 2008 to 2014. He was once again recognized by his peers in 2021 when he was named the CPhA Pharmacist of the Year.
His approach to the profession was shaped by his mentors Donald Y. Barker, PhD, Charles Cortez ’72, RPh, Donald G. Floriddia ’71, PhD and Ralph L. Saroyan ’64, RPh.
“Ralph and Don [Floriddia] were big on professional issues,” he shared. “Charles and Donald [Barker] taught me the art of pharmacy. Together, they showed me the foundation of pharmacy, and I try to stay true to that. We all have our challenges, but we must put our best foot forward and do the things we think are right by our patient and by our profession.”
Dr. Pavlovich has experience in a broad range of practice settings: long-term care, hospice, mail-service, compounding and community pharmacy. He has owned and operated Westcliff Compounding Pharmacy in Newport Beach since 2011. In addition, he is the inventor and holder of U.S. Patent 11,185,540 B2 for two dosage forms used in the management of opiate and alcohol addiction.
